Qatar finished 3rd in the U23 Asian Championship in the People’s Republic of China. In the match for 3rd place, the team under national coach Felix Sanchez prevailed 1-0 against South Korea on Friday. Akram Afif from KAS Eupen scored the winning goal in the 39th minute.
Taking 3rd place crowned Qatar’s fantastic performance during the entire tournament. In the opening round, Qatar won its group matches against Uzbekistan (1-0), hosts China (2-1) and Oman (1-0) and entered the quarterfinals as group winner. Here, Qatar eliminated the U23 team from Palestine 3-2. Qatar fell to an unlucky defeat in the semi-final against Vietnam, and only had to bow out on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
Akram Afif, who is expected to return to KAS Eupen next week, played in all five games in these Asian Championship finals and was a key player for his team. Akram Afif not only scored the winning goal for his country in the 1-0 win against South Korea but also in the 1-0 victory against Oman. The KAS Eupen attacking midfielder also gave his team a 1-0 lead in the 2-2 draw against Vietnam and was also successful from the penalty spot.
