KAS Eupen’s next big challenge in the struggle to avoid relegation is imminent: although the Kehrweg Stadium will be hosting SC Charleroi, currently second in the table, at 20:30 on Wednesday, the team coached by Claude Makelele wants to do its utmost not to leave empty-handed after 90 minutes.
Mamadou Koné in for Mbaye Leye
KAS Eupen will have to cope without the suspended Mbaye Leye, a key player in the team’s attack. His role as main striker is expected to be taken over by newcomer Mamadou Koné. The Ivorian was able to impress on Saturday in his first game in the KAS Eupen jersey and crowned his performance with a magnificent goal to take the lead at 2-1.
Nils Schouterden and Mickaël Tirpan are back
The return of Nils Schouterden and Mickaël Tirpan sees two regular players back in the squad. Nils Schouterden has completed his suspension and Mickaël Tirpan has recovered from a slight muscle strain. “Both Nils and Mickaël are very important players for our team. Their return improves the balance of our team,” said KAS head coach Claude Makelele at the pre-match press conference.
The game on Wednesday evening comes too soon for Rémi Mulumba, only signed on Tuesday. “He must first meet his teammates and get used to his new environment here in Eupen,” said coach Claude Makelele about his new signing. “From next weekend, he will probably be able to help us out as a central midfield player, to take some of the pressure off our midfielders Luis Garcia and Lazare Amani,” added Claude Makelele.
“We also have an opportunity against Charleroi”
“We have no choice – we have to win the game,” said KAS midfielder Nils Schouterden before the match. “Of course, it is not for nothing that Charleroi is a permanent fixture among the 6 top-ranked teams. But our performance last Saturday in Liège gives me confidence that we will not be heading into this match without a chance. We aim to exploit our home advantage, defend with 11 men, attack with 11 men and stay focused for the full 90 minutes,” said Nils Schouterden ahead of the crucial encounter.
Risk category C match: No bags!
The game against Charleroi has been classified as a risk category C match by the security authorities. This means that spectators are not allowed to bring bags, backpacks and belt bags into the stadium. The ban also applies to the business area. Umbrellas with a point are also prohibited, but pocket umbrellas are permitted.
