Sporting Lokeren’s Daknam Stadium hosted the season finale of the fourth major school tournament of all clubs in the Belgian Pro League. As partners in this school sport campaign, the boys and girls of the Pater Damian Grundschule (PDG, primary school) and Pater Damian Förderschule (PDF, special school) also participated in the fourth edition of the Pro League Schools Cup in the jersey of KAS Eupen and put in a strong performance. Finishing second in the preliminary round, the Eupen team comprising pupils from the two schools narrowed missed qualifying for the final round.
In the opening game, the East Belgians had to endure a 0-4 defeat to FC Antwerp. In the second game, the team coached by Willy Herzet earned a 2-2 draw against Sint Truiden VV, the latter becoming group leader and overall winner of the Pro League Schools Cup.
With a 7-0 demolition of Beerschot-Wilrijk and a 5-2 win over the school team representing KAA Gent, the boys and girls from Eupen gave a convincing overall performance and took second place in their group of five. Unfortunately, this was not enough to qualify for the next round. Nevertheless, it was a unique experience for all those taking part to be able to feel like real professionals playing for a day in a first division stadium while wearing the jerseys of the best teams in the country.
“On behalf of KAS Eupen, I would like to congratulate the PDG/PDF Eupen team on their performance in Lokeren and thank the players and Willy Herzet’s coaching staff for preparing the team so well for the tournament and for representing KAS Eupen so valiantly at the Schools Cup,” said Mario Kohnen, KAS Eupen’s Youth Administration Director.
