Mersad Selimbegović Appointed New Head Coach of KAS Eupen

KAS Eupen has appointed Mersad Selimbegović as their new head coach. The 42-year-old Bosnian brings extensive experience from his tenure at the second-division club SSV Jahn Regensburg, where he worked in both youth development and professional team management. KAS Eupen is confident that with Selimbegović, they can achieve their goal of promoting talented young players in the Challenger Pro League.

The new coach signed a two-year contract in Eupen this Thursday, valid until June 30, 2026. He will begin his work with the team as soon as his work permit is obtained.

Born on April 29, 1982, in Rogatica, Selimbegović played professionally from 2004 to 2006 with Bosnian Premier League clubs NK Žepče and FK Željezničar Sarajevo. In 2006, he moved to SSV Jahn Regensburg, where he ended his playing career in 2012 due to injury and transitioned into coaching.

At Jahn Regensburg, Selimbegović progressed through various stages of youth development on his way to becoming the head coach of the first team (2019-2023). He started as an assistant coach for the second team in 2012, then served as a youth department coordinator, U19 team coach, and assistant coach for the A-team. After leaving Jahn Regensburg, he joined FC Hansa Rostock in December 2023, but the collaboration ended following the team’s relegation from the 2. Bundesliga.

Christoph Henkel, General Director of KAS Eupen, commented: “Mersad Selimbegović brings valuable experience in developing young players, exemplified by talents like Jan-Niklas Beste. His personality and down-to-earth nature impressed us during our discussions. He is eager to familiarize himself with Belgian football and embark on this new rebuilding phase with us.”

Mersad Selimbegović said: “I am very excited about my new role as head coach of KAS Eupen. In my discussions with the club’s officials, we quickly found a strong alignment in our ideas for the development of the players and the team. With this trust, I look forward confidently to the challenge of getting to know the new environment of Belgian football.”
